But in a real personal day to day kind or reality what is faith?? The word that springs to my mind is Believe. Now we can believe in a lot of things.. we can believe in ourselves, our plans, our abilities.. even the God given ones. But what is it that we need to have faith or belief in to truly move mountains like the verse in Matthew says? Well, believe it or not.. the answer is one word.. and it its not so much a what, but a who. It is Jesus!
Now you may say.. Cool! Most of us can say we believe in Jesus, He came and died for our sins. But, do we really believe and have faith in Him, do we trust Him to provide for our every need, to work out our lives in His perfect will. Do we TRUST Him?
That brings us to the second word that comes to mind when I think of faith..
Do we trust Him?? It is easy to say that we trust God when things are going well, but what about when life is full of trials and tribulations? What about when nothing seems to be going the way we think it should and we feel that God is not even hearing, let alone answering our prayers ? (at least the way we think He should)
Let's take a look at a women in the Bible names Martha..
( I am gonna paraphrase but to read the account go to John 11)
Martha was a close friend of Jesus, she spent time with Him regularly. He came to her house and she served Him to the best of her ability. One day Martha's brother Lazarus got sick, now not just a little bit sick, but at death's door kind of sick. So what did Martha do? She cried out to Jesus, she sent someone to tell him that Lazarus was sick and that they needed Him to come and heal him. Then what did Jesus do? He came running right? Nope! He actually waited 2 days and then went to see them. By then Lazarus was dead.. can you just imagine the emotions running through Martha.. the questions and doubts that were probably overwhelming her?
John 11: 21 says "Now Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You.” The next part of the passage Jesus tells her that Lazarus will live again, and she makes reference to the last days when all will live again, she doesn't believe or have faith that Jesus can bring Lazarus back from the dead. Then Jesus says “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”
Martha said to Him, “Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.” Martha may not have had the faith to believe that Jesus could raise Lazarus right then and there, in fact she went so far as to tell Jesus that they shouldn't open the tomb, but she believes Jesus is the Son of God. And that is all that she needed to do.. Just Believe!
Then what did Jesus do? He brought life out of death. Martha saw with her own eyes the glory and power of God and her faith was strengthened.
We just have to believe in Jesus, is there a circumstance or situation that you need God to work in? Just exercise the faith you do have and remember that God is able, God is good, God will work, He loves you and His timing is always perfect.
