Here are Heather's thoughts...
In light of yesterday’s horrific tragedy in Connecticut, I cannot keep myself from weeping for the families who lost loved ones. An event of this magnitude is simply too much for us to even begin to understand. There are so many dimensions to this issue, but in our search to cope, it is natural that we would ask questions. How? Why? How do we prevent this type of massacre in the future?
Whether you are discussing increased security or creating more laws, I would propose that those actions, more or less, are like trying to put a bandaid on a bleeding heart and expecting it to stop bleeding.
I agree, wholeheartedly with Ken Ham’s statement, “The Bible is entirely sufficient. Be equipped by it.” So, naturally, in the midst of my hurting heart and my questions, God’s Word is my source. Let’s take a look at what God’s Word says and how it might shed some light on the issue at hand.
The first question we often ask is, “What could possibly make a person do something this horrific?” The Bible has the answer. The world teaches that man is basically good. The Bible says quite the opposite. Jeremiah 17:9 says, “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?” (NIV). Jesus said in Matthew 15:19, “For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander.” (ESV). You see, the issue here is not the 2nd amendment, it’s a heart issue. It’s a fallen man issue. It’s a sin issue.
One of the things I love and appreciate most about our God is that He never asks us to do anything without providing the way. The Bible has the answer to our questions. God has the solution to our problems. He IS the solution. “The Lord your God will circumcise your hearts and the hearts of your descendants, so that you may love Him with all your heart and all your soul and live.” Deuteronomy 30:6 (NIV). Romans 2:29 says, in part, “…circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit…”(NIV).
So, yes, increased security may help prevent some crimes. Perhaps more gun control may be a temporary stumbling block, but the real issue is in the Spiritual realm. Again, our faithful Father has given us the solution to our bleeding hearts, and it isn’t found in those solutions. It is found in these:
Whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked. 1 John 2:6 ESV
Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ. ~1 Corinthians 11:1 (ESV)
For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. ~1 Peter 2:21
Therefore be imitators of God… ~Ephesians 5:1
For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son…. ~Romans 8:29
For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. ~Galatians 3:27
I can’t help but think that if we started “putting on Christ”, our world would look different.
…God is love. ~1 John 4:8 (ESV)
God is light and in Him there is no darkness. ~1 John 1:5 (NKJV)
In John 14:9, Jesus said, “Whoever has seen Me has seen the Father”
Beloved, let us put on Christ, let us be His light, and let us be His love. And let us continue to pray diligently for the hurting families. Let us pray that, somehow, God would be glorified in the midst of this tragedy.
