My husband went first and then called to our sons so that they could jump off of the rock, into the water, and into his arms. We were trying to encourage our younger son to jump in without his lifejacket. He can swim. His daddy is right there to catch him in his big, strong arms. We tried to convince him that he didn’t need his lifejacket, but he clung to the safety and assurance that it brought to him. It made me think about the things that we cling to rather than jumping confidently into the arms of our Father in heaven.
One of the many reasons I love the Word of God is because of the vast promises it holds for us concerning His care and good will for our lives. First, let’s consider the word promise as in 2 Peter 1:4a by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises”. We can count on these promises because Titus 1:2 tells us that God cannot lie. Let us not cling to the promises of man, but the promises of God.
So what does God promise us? Let’s take a look at His Word:
For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.
And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
But whoever listens to me will dwell safely and will be secure, without fear of evil.
I will both lie down in peace, and sleep; For You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.
For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you.
Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall directyour paths.
This is, of course, just a small sampling of the promises His Word holds for us. We all know them, but do we believe them? James tells us that even the devil believes and trembles. Do we really trust in, rely on, and cling to these words, these promises?
Or do we trust in our lifejackets?
What are you clinging to with both hands that keeps you from opening up your arms and jumping faithfully into the capable arms of your loving Heavenly Father?
God Bless, Heather
