If you are just joining us, WELCOME! (click here to start at the beginning of the Galatians study.)
So we are in chapter 4 today, I apologize if I am taking forever in between posts.. Summer has been super busy, things should quiet down now that Pumpkin season, I mean Fall is coming. (Okay, okay I may be delusional, but please don't correct me. *smile ).
So here is chapter 4...
6 Because you are his children, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts. He is the Holy Spirit. By his power we call God “Abba.” Abba means Father.
7 So you aren’t slaves any longer. You are God’s children. Because you are his children, he gives you what he promised to give his people.
But now we know God, and even better God knows us, (insert sigh of relief.) and we can live a life of freedom in Christ!
I am reading a book by Emily P. Freeman called A Million Little Ways and in it she says:
" Cashiers and cellists are capable of making art because they both have the power to influence, to be fully awake to their Maker, and fully aware of His making of them. I can't imagine anything more dangerous to the enemy of our hearts than people who know who they are." (or Whose they are)
So who are you? You are a child of God, you are beautiful, and He has wonderfully amazing things planned for you..
yes, you there..
the one washing dishes for the thirteenth time today or doing the 5th load of laundry
the stay at home Mom,
or the one that stays home to take care of Mom
or the cashier at the grocery store
...you are His.
Let's live a victorious life over the enemy because we know we belong to the King, and He has already fought the battle to save us, and wants to use us until we go to live in Heaven with Him.
So back to the passage, the Galatians had forgotten that they had been set free, they were going back to their religious holidays and rituals, and it was breaking Paul's heart. And if it was grieving Paul can you imagine what it was doing to the heart of God? God who gave His only Son and to offer them absolute freedom.
But they were choosing to live in a way that did not reflect the freedom that He was offering them, they were still in a bondage of sorts.
Are we choosing freedom, and a love relationship with God or rituals and routines?
13 As you know, it was because I was sick that I first preached the good news to you. 14 My sickness was hard on you. But you didn’t put me off. You didn’t make fun of me. Instead, you welcomed me as if I were an angel of God. You welcomed me as if I were Christ Jesus himself.
15 What has happened to all of your joy? If you could have torn out your own eyes and given them to me, you would have. I can give witness to that. 16 Have I become your enemy now by telling you the truth?
Paul is commending the people of Galatia for they way the accepted him, even when it seems he had an illness, they welcomed him as if he were an angel of God, they showed him love.
They were acting as true disciples of Christ...
"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35"By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another." John 13:34-35
But the enemy wanted to stop them, and he was using legalism to slow them down and distract them from the love relationship that God was desiring to have with them... and in the process they had lost their joy.
Do you feel like you are struggling to find joy?
I know when I am lacking joy it is because I have not been spending time with Jesus, I think we struggle because we forget it is all about Jesus, and we try to live a Godly life on our own.
Why do we fall into legalism, is it because we are prideful, and think we can live a Godly life within our own power?
Don't know about you but this is definitely something I will be praying, and thinking through in the next few days.
Because I don't know about you but I am going to choose joy and freedom every chance I get.
What about you? What part of this passage touched your heart?
