What the Bible Says...
13 Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 And He found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers doing business. 15 When He had made a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changers’ money and overturned the tables.
16 And He said to those who sold doves, “Take these things away! Do not make My Father’s house a house of merchandise!” 17 Then His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for Your house has eaten Me up.
Why was Jesus so upset?
Jesus was upset because the priests were taking advantage of God's people who were coming to offer their sacrifices to God. Every year people would bring oxen, sheep, and doves to be sacrificed, but the priests would inspect the animals and find any little flaw so that they could say they were not worthy of sacrifice, and then proceed to overcharge the people to buy their 'pre-approved' animals.
They were keeping people from coming to God, their greed, their sin, was standing between God and His children, and Jesus stepped in and cleared the way.
It is important to note that Jesus was not out of control, this is apparent here… “And He said to those who sold doves, “Take these things away!” He did not want to harm the doves, He was aware of what He was doing, this was a righteous anger, not a fit of temper.
Jesus was angry because they were preventing people from coming to God. It grieves the heart Jesus when we are separated from Him, that is why He was wiling to die for our sins, so we would no longer be separated from Him.
He cleared the way.
Jesus doesn't get angry when we watch TV or forget to pray, but when we put up barriers of sin that keep us from Him, or other people from Him then He will correct us...
"For whom the Lord loves He chastens, And scourges every son whom He receives.” Hebrews 12:6
We don't often talk about the chastening of the Lord, we would rather talk about His love and grace, but I encourage you to look at chastening as proof of His love.
God knows best and He wants the best for us.
Like I have said before; Sin is not bad because it is sin, it is sin because it is bad.
18 So the Jews answered and said to Him, “What sign do You show to us, since You do these things?”
19 Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”
20 Then the Jews said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?”
21 But He was speaking of the temple of His body. 22 Therefore, when He had risen from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this to them; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had said. 23 Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name when they saw the signs which He did.24 But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He knew all men, 25 and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for He knew what was in man.
Throughout this passage and the beginning of chapter 2 we see references to the disciples believing or remembering something at a later time. Jesus was not only fulfilling prophecy and doing miracles, He was teaching and raising up those closest to Him, just like He is raising up and teaching us as we walk with Him.
23 Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name when they saw the signs which He did. 24 But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He knew all men, 25 and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for He knew what was in man.
Jesus knew that some of the people only believed and followed Him because of His miracles, they were all about the miracles not about Jesus himself... let's remember to put our faith in who Jesus is, not on what Jesus does.
-It means we are loved by God so much that He was willing to die so that we can have a close relationship with Him.
-It means that God loves us too much to leave us in our sin, He loves us enough to correct us.
-That there are lessons everywhere, Jesus was always teaching the disciples things, and it is the same for us.
1. Let's remember to pay attention to what God is teaching us, whether our circumstances are good, bad, or in between, God wants to teach us something.
2. To memorize this verse so we will be able to remind ourselves and tell others about the love of Christ.
